How to check if a person really is a lawyer?

The Barreau occasionally receives complaints from customers who unknowingly have used the services of FAUX LAWYERS. These are people who claim to be members of the Barreau but practice the profession illegally.

It is important to know that a fake lawyer or even a former lawyer now removed from the Roll of Order of advocates, can provide you bad advice.

But that's not all. The documents that he produces for you could be invalid. For example, a fake will, a false divorce or a worthless contract.

Unfortunately, if you hire a fake lawyer, you get no appeal with the Barreau du Québec. You will have to go to court to obtain justice.

Fortunately, there is a way to prevent such situations. Before you hire someone, check with the Barreau du Québec if the person has his license to practice. This free and easy verification can save you time, money and most importantly, many problems.

To check whether a person is a member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec and does have the right to exercise the profession of lawyer:

  • By phone  - Call the following number: 514 954-3400 or toll free 1 800 361-8495.
  • By fax  - Write the following number, stating the full name of the person you want to hire, as well as its coordinates: 514 954-3464.
  • By e-mail  - Write to the following address, specifying the full name of the person you want to hire, as well as its coordinates: tableau@barreau.qc.ca
