A recent dinner-meeting of the Lord Reading Law Society was devoted to a tribute to the Hon. Lawrence A. Poitras upon his retirement as Chief Justice of the Superior Court. Among the members of the judiciary in attendance were Madame Chief Justice Lyse Lemieuxand Associate Chief Justice André Deslongchamps of the Superior Court. The Society was also honoured by the attendance of Me Denis Marsolais, President of the Chambre des Notaires, and Me Mark Peacock, President of the Canadian Bar Association's Québec Branch, who adressed the Society on the CBA's activities.
The audience was regaled by speeches by the Hon. Pierre Michaud, Chief Justice of Québec, Mr. Justice Perry Meyer, who was among the group of judges appointed to the Superior Court on the same date as Me Poitras, and Me Jacques Brien, a long-time friend of Me Poitras. While the speakers were unanimous in their praise of Me Poitras' accomplishments, they also afforded the audience a light-hearted view of his achievements and personal qualities. In a spirited reply, Me Poitras deftly returned the volleys and offered several amusing glimpses into his tenure as chief justice. A most memorable evening concluded with the granting of a lifetime honourary membership in the Society to Me Poitras.
