The keynote address of the evening was delivered by Madam Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella of the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
Madam Justice Abella's talk was a challenge to the legal profession to not only seek justice and fairness, but also to be seen as doing so. Recognising that lawyers are faced with increasing commercial pressures and complicated legal procedures, she called upon the profession to remember its roots as being the gate-keepers of the law and to place the interests of the law even ahead of one's immediate economic interest. She noted that the public's expectation is that the legal profession be committed to the delivery of justice, and that the profession must meet this expectation.
The next meeting of the Lord Reading Law Society will take place on Wednesday Junuary 13, 1999 at the Montefiore Club, 1195 Guy Street, with cocktails at 6:15 P.M., and dinner at 7:00 P.M.. The Honorable Mr. Justice Michel B astarache of the Supreme Court of Canada will address the Society on « The Law's creative power to solve present-day problems ».
