The Lord Reading Law Society celebrates its 50th anniversary

Steven G. Slimovitch and Arnold J. Cohen, laywers
The Lord Reading Law Society recently celebrated its 5050 anniversary, the Society established the « Past Presidents' Medal », to be awarded from time to time to a worthy individual who is a current or former member of the Society, who has achieved excellence in the legal profession, who has made a significant contribution of service to the community and who embodies the highest standards of integrity. The first Past Presidents' Medal was bestowed on Yoine Goldstein for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the legal and Jewish communities.

The keynote address of the evening was delivered by Madam Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella of the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Madam Justice Abella's talk was a challenge to the legal profession to not only seek justice and fairness, but also to be seen as doing so. Recognising that lawyers are faced with increasing commercial pressures and complicated legal procedures, she called upon the profession to remember its roots as being the gate-keepers of the law and to place the interests of the law even ahead of one's immediate economic interest. She noted that the public's expectation is that the legal profession be committed to the delivery of justice, and that the profession must meet this expectation.

The next meeting of the Lord Reading Law Society will take place on Wednesday Junuary 13, 1999 at the Montefiore Club, 1195 Guy Street, with cocktails at 6:15 P.M., and dinner at 7:00 P.M..
