Aptitude assessment examinations

These examinations are managed by the École du Barreau.

The examination Legislation, regulations and ethical issues relating to the practice of law in Québec

The aptitude assessment examination deals with the regulation and professional conduct of lawyers and allows the Barreau du Québec to determine whether the candidate has the knowledge regarding the duties and obligations of all members of the Barreau du Québec that is required in order to practise law.

The following professional documentation is recommended for this examination:

The examination is offered once a year, in September.

You must send all the documents required to register for the examination before July 1st.

If you wish, prior to the examination, you may take the eight days of professional training offered by the École du Barreau du Québec on ethics, the rules of professional conduct and the practise of the profession.

The examination Civil Law I and Related Proceedings

The examination Civil Law I and Related Proceedings may deal with the following subjects, among others: persons, family law (including matrimonial regimes and divorce), successions, property law, obligations (including extracontractual civil liability), and the Consumer Protection Act.

The following professional documentation is recommended for this examination:

The examination is offered once a year, in December.

You must send all the documents required to register for the examination before October 1st.

You may take the preparatory courses offered by the École du Barreau du Québec (in French only) before the examination. The 42 on-line courses and 4 in-class courses are refresher courses on Québec law and are offered each year from August to December.

The examination Civil Law II and Related Proceedings

The examination Civil Law II and Related Proceedings may deal with the following subjects, among others: nominate contracts, evidence and procedure, prescription, business law, priorities and hypothecs, publication of rights, and private international law.

The following professional documentation is recommended for this examination:

The examination is offered once a year, in December.

You must send all the documents required to register for the examination before October 1st .

You may take the preparatory courses offered by the École du Barreau du Québec (in French only) before the examination. The 42 on-line courses and 4 in-class courses are refresher courses on Québec law and are offered each year from August to December.
