Wondering about your rights? A lawyer is your best ally.
The Barreau du Québec and the regional bar associations of the province are launching an awareness campaign entitled Wondering about your rights? A lawyer is your best ally. The purpose of this campaign is to remind the public of the advantages of dealing with a lawyer and alert it to the dangers of “fake” lawyers claiming to provide legal advice.
Awareness of illegal practice of the legal profession is a matter of protecting the public. When you consider retaining the services of a lawyer for the first time, verify whether that person is a member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec and has the right to practice law.
Non-lawyers who perform acts reserved for lawyers or who give reason to believe that they are authorized to practice as a lawyer are practicing law illegally and must be reported to the Barreau du Québec. The reporting of illegal practice is treated in confidence, and the identity of the reporting person can remain confidential.
On its web page dedicated to the illegal practice of the legal profession, the Barreau du Québec explains why it is important to place your trust in a lawyer in good standing and how you can report illegal practice when you are not sure.
