Distinction between "practising advocate" and "retired advocate with restricted right to practise" Retired advocates with restricted right to practise are 55 years of age or over. They may use the prefix "Me" or "Mtre" after their name, provided it is followed by the title "retired advocate". However, they may not assume the title of advocate or attorney, verbally or otherwise. Nevertheless, retired advocates with restricted right to practise may: 1. perform the acts referred to in subsection 1 of section 128 of the Act respecting the Barreau du Québec for others, but only within the framework of their practice within a non-profit legal person; 2. if duly certified, act as certified small claims mediators. Please contact the Barreau du Québec at infobarreau@barreau.qc.ca for more details on the restrictions that apply to retired advocates with restricted right to practise.
