Distinction between « Practising advocate » and « Canadian legal advisor » The Canadian legal advisor may use the prefix “Me” or “Mtre” before his name provided it is followed by the title “Canadian legal advisor” or the initials “c.l.a.” and a reference to the Canadian province or territory where he is legally authorized to practise law. He may give legal advice and consultations on legal matters involving the law of the Canadian province or territory where he is legally authorized to practise law or involving matters under federal jurisdiction or public international law. He may prepare and draw up proceedings and plead or act before any tribunal, but only with respect to matters under federal jurisdiction. Please contact the Barreau du Québec at infobarreau@barreau.qc.ca to know the Canadian province or territory where this Canadian legal advisor is legally authorized to practise law and for more details on the restrictions that apply to this type of permit.

Distinction entre « avocat en exercice » et « conseiller juridique d’entreprise » Le conseiller juridique d’entreprise peut faire précéder son nom du préfixe « Me » ou « Mtre », en le faisant suivre du titre « conseiller juridique d’entreprise » ou des initiales « c.j.ent. » et d’une mention de l’État où il est légalement autorisé à exercer la profession d'avocat. Il exerce pour le compte exclusif de son employeur ou de ses filiales, les activités décrites au paragraphe 1 de l’article 128 de la Loi sur le Barreau. Retired advocate

Distinction between « Practising advocate » and « Retired advocate » A Retired advocate is 55 years of age or over. He may use the prefix “Me” or “Mtre” before his name provided it is followed by the title “retired advocate”; he may not, however, assume the title of advocate or attorney, verbally or otherwise, or practise the profession of advocate, in particular perform the acts described in section 128 of the Act respecting the Barreau du Québec, including pleading or acting before a tribunal referred to in subparagraphs 1 to 7 of paragraph a of subsection 2 of that section. Please refer to section 128 of the Act respecting the Barreau du Québec to know the acts that cannot be performed by a retired advocate or contact the Barreau du Québec at infobarreau@barreau.qc.ca for more details on the restrictions that apply to this type of permit.
