Practicing in Quebec
Under section 35 of the Charter of the French Language, professional orders may issue permits only to persons who have adequate knowledge of the official language to practice the profession.
Special authorization is valid for a specific file until a final decision is rendered, for a maximum of 12 months. If necessary, it can be renewed. Holders of a special authorization do not become members of the Barreau du Québec.
A temporary restrictive permit allows lawyers to perform certain acts for a period of one year and may be renewed.
Three types of permanent permits are available to Canadian lawyers: full permits for Canadian lawyers, solicitor permits and special Canadian legal advisor permits. As a holder of one of these types of permits, you must complete the annual registration with the Barreau du Québec.
Note The Barreau du Québec reserves the right to request proof of good conduct in Canada or elsewhere. You must be able to provide such proof on request for all places where you have resided for a period of six months or more since the age of 18.
