Verifying the status of a lawyer

In order to practice law in Québec, a person has to be a member of the Barreau du Québec. This is why it's important, before doing business with a lawyer, to check his status on the Roll of the Order. In only a few minutes you can find out whether the person is a member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec and whether they have been the subject of disciplinary measures.

To verify whether someone is a member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec and has the right to practise law:

Authentication of signature

The Barreau's Registry Office can also provide you with a authenticate a lawyer's signature.

For the authentication of a signature, you must e-mail us a copy of the document on which the lawyer's signature appears so that we can prepare your document. The Registry Office will check whether the signature matches the sample in the lawyer's professional record and also check whether the lawyer is duly entered on the Roll of the Order or has previously been a member of the Barreau du Québec.

We will contact you once the document is ready and you will then have to come to the Barreau du Québec with the original document.

Cost: $50 + taxes
